Forklift Components in More Detail
A forklift is made of many parts. The key parts which make up a forklift truck are the frame of the truck, the engine parts, the overhead guard, the wheels and the tilt cylinders. Moreover, a forklift consists of different kinds of attachments. All the parts making up a lift truck are all essential as they work together to make the functions of the equipment possible. The following paragraphs describe some of the lift truck parts in detail.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the forklift truck's metal roof. It sits on top of the cab area and protects the machine operator whilst she or he is sitting and driving. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck would damage the controls inside the cab or harm the operator. The overhead guard is integral to the frame assembly on some units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical lift truck part made of interlocking rails. The mast allows the forks to move up and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails can either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast can be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Lift Truck Carriage - The carriage is the part which the forks and various other types of attachments are mounted to. Actually, the carriage is directly connected to the hydraulic cylinder and is connected by chains. To allow the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage can have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - a back rest is a metal rack that prevents a load from falling backwards while the carriage is raised to its full height. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - a range of attachments could be fixed to the front of the forklift truck. The most common type of attachment is forks. In addition, there are L-shaped members, rotators, rollers, roll clamps, pole handlers and so on. These various attachments are handy for moving different types of loads.
