Forklift Truck Training Course
Operators should undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck in order to receive forklift operator certification. The training must be specific to the forklift attachments and type that you will be using on the job location. Training must also reflect the atmosphere in which you will be working. Forklift safety should be a main concern for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Credentials
Anybody operating a forklift should undergo training and certification prior to assuming operator duties. Basic credentials for utilizing a forklift include being at least eighteen years old and the physical ability to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The main concern of any forklift operator should be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians near the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the machine or its attachments. Pedestrians should always have the right of way, and forklift operators must honk their horns when working at crosswalks or intersections or near pedestrians.
Weather Conditions
Forklift accidents often happen on loading docks. These places become hazardous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor extremely slippery. Wet floor conditions could result in a hazard and drivers should be aware of potential hazards when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification programs for forklift drivers consist of both practical training and classroom instruction which can be tailored for the particular needs of each work environment. Training must be undertaken on the forklift type and attachments which will be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
On average, there is about one hundred deaths attributed to forklift accidents, while more than one hundred thousand are injured by forklifts. Nearly all of these accidents are avoidable with correct operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift models are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck providing great height and versatility. The arm, or crane, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the person using it to raise the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Regular forklifts aren't able to move the load towards and away from the forklift cab, whereas a telescopic forklift allows that movement. The telescopic forklift is normally used in both construction and agriculture. It is recommended for applications where greater control and lift is necessary.
A forklift carton clamp attachments are recommended in cases needing high volume carton handling. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings that allow the operator to use uniform clamping force when lifting a cargo. It is available with a backrest which protects the cargo from damage.
A slip sheet attachment fits onto a slip sheet forklift. It is used for storing systems which don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This kind of system is handy for intra-corporate deliveries and for overseas shipments.
A man basket is a lift platform meant specially to hoist employees. The basket attaches to the forklift forks, held in with a strap or chain which is to be secured directly to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the employees from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the worker's safety harness.
